When we were asked to guest blog for Vintage Victory, we were thrilled! Our assignment-a night on the town at the sold out Blitz Party, Shoreditch to have a nose at what people considered their forties finest.
Walking into the Village Underground lined with sandbags, it felt like we had gone underground. The dinge & gloom added to that 40s feeling, followed by a raid siren accompanied by confetti raining on the dance floor as we headed to the makeshift bar. Drinks were served in tea cups & the 'ration card' drinks menu featuredclever specialty cocktails. Our favourite was 'The Blitz'-Vodka shaken with Elderflower & Fresh Lemon, charged withfizz, served in a champagne flute. There were four others with equally cute nameslike 'Ginger Daisy' & 'Gin Fizz'.
On with the style hunt...the ladies were wearing a variety of tea dresses-for the most part 80s dresses, complimented by40s styling-40s make-up & seamed stockings. Lots of gals added faux or real fur to their outfits-we even saw a fox stole. There were also lots of army & sailor outfits...there was even a Rosie the Riveter. In ladies locks were flowers, fascinators & hats. Suprisingly, there was a lack of victory rolls, gals going for wavier styles instead.
Men had mostly gone for army or sailor outfits. Lots of guys went for the easy option of a white shirt, dark trousers and braces. Others went for more of a prohibition suit look. There was even one Charlie Chaplin! Whatever people were wearing, everyone had made an effort to dress up for the occasion. Some just pulled something right out of their already glamorous wardrobes, others borrowed from family & friends.
Assignment complete, we headed to the dance floor. Naturally packed, we squeezed in for a few dances along to the live band-the highlight of the night. Tickets are now available for the next Blitz Party on Saturday 14th May...get in quick if you fancy it, they sell out fast!
Victory rolls & cocktails,
Felicity & Jess xx
